Hair Salon in Matsushiro

Various places and events surrounding the garden

Matsushiro, located in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture, sits at the foot of a softly sloping foothill plain.

Its landscape is shaped by a net-like system of waterways connecting spring water to residential ponds, and traces of its historic townscape still remain throughout the area.

The site lies on the edge of the town, where the subtle micro-topography created by remnants of waterways and a small garden pond forms the foundation for a richly wooded garden that defines various settings for daily life.

The road in front, created a few years ago when the nearby river was filled in, is expected to develop into a busy main road.

This has produced a curious situation in which the “back” of the site has effectively turned into its “front,” now facing the increasing flow of cars.

The client’s family had acquired the vacant neighboring house and its plot, hoping to renovate the existing building as an annex and create a hair salon connected to the lush, wooded garden that is also part of their daily life.

The filtered shade of the woodland garden, the small chickens kept outside, the informal passage opened to neighbors, firewood chopping, the pond for crayfish, the farm shed and gardening work, the community co-op activities, family members who visit from time to time, piano performances, the book collection, and the gradual cultivation of the mountain all come together as various places and happenings scattered in and around the site that are subtly interconnected.

We began to consider whether a small renovation might capture one thread of this larger flow, tying the new salon into the gentle network of everyday activities unfolding across the property.

After the initial plan to renovate the annex, the project shifted toward converting part of the main house where the client’s family lives into the hair salon. The main house, with its facade opening toward the garden, had been built using a panel construction system that allowed only limited alterations. For this reason, the renovation focused primarily on new fittings and built-in furniture for the salon.

In addition, to carry forward the spatial character and everyday activities of the temporary shed that the client’s father had built between the house and the garden, we decided to gradually design the entire site, including the garden, the garage, and the surrounding exterior spaces.

The newly designed passageway connecting the main house and the garage functions both as the approach to the hair salon and as its signage. It also divides the garden into two parts, creating a small pocket space that faces the road.

By gradually working on the site as a whole, we aim to link the experience of the salon with the experience of the garden and with the daily activities of the client’s family, allowing the network of places and happenings to deepen and evolve.

As preparations for opening the hair salon progressed, each member of the client’s family decided where they would live, and as a result the renovation area within the main house expanded. This created a more spacious environment for the salon, one that can more fully embrace the richness of the garden.

Rather than completing all of the work planned for Process 2 at once, we chose to renovate the salon thoroughly while gradually improving the garden, the garage, and the annex. This approach scatters small “starting points” throughout the site, anticipating that the client will continue to update and develop these areas over time.

By renovating in a way that stays close to the garden and the salon as they both continue to evolve, the environment will remain in constant transformation, with places and happenings shifting and unfolding into the future.
